SCAN of Northern VA
SCAN has 4 programs: CASA (court appointed special advocates), professional development, family programs, and public education.
Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program:
- we recruit, train, support, and supervise community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the Arlington and Alexandria court systems
- CASA volunteers serve as the voice of abused and neglected children in court, ensuring judges have the best information possible on which to base potentially life-changing decisions
Professional Development:
- trains the front lines of child protection, police officers, teachers, medical professionals, coaches, etc., on the signs and symptoms of neglect and abuse
- front-line protectors are taught to identify potential neglect and abuse and respond in a trauma-informed manner to avoid re-traumatization
Family Programs:
- provides information, support, and resources to at-risk families
- teaches English and Spanish classes using evidence-based curricula that help family members build stronger connections with one another
- parents learn about child development, communication of physical and emotional needs, establishing routines for family activities, effective discipline methods, handling stress, and building family cohesion
- provides concurrent children’s programs to help youth develop emotional and social competence, resilience, and communication skills
Public Education:
- Educates parents, caregivers, community leaders, and neighbors—about positive parenting, preventing child abuse, and strengthening families
